St James’ Church

General & Holistic Equipping

For Mitchell, who had attended church for over 20 years without forming friendships, true belonging felt out of reach. His story in St James’ Church illustrates how small but intentional steps can spark long-term cultural transformation.

Leadership Takes the First Step

The turning point began with a sermon on disability inclusion by KIN in 2021. This catalysed the formation of the 恩ABLE (pronounced ‘enable’) Ministry, a new initiative focused on ministering to individuals with special needs. This moment marked the church’s first intentional step to not just welcome—but understand.

Laying the Groundwork Through Relationship

Following this cultural shift, a young adult took a simple, yet profound initiative: gathering peers to meet Mitchell for the first time, not as a project, but as a person. This small step opened the door to genuine friendship and modelled what inclusive relationship-building could look like. KIN then set out to develop a guidebook – Koinonia Groups – which offers practical steps to forming Christcentered inclusive small groups like Mitchell’s.

A Community Takes Shape

By 2023, Mitchell was part of a small youth group. He wasn’t just present—he was known, welcomed, and accepted. The church’s culture had started to shift, with inclusion moving from awareness into action.

Evidence of Belonging

In a milestone that spoke volumes, Mitchell turned 28—and for the first time in his life, he invited friends over for a meal. This simple act of hospitality displayed his growing sense of belonging and affirmed the transformation happening not just around him, but within him.

What Changed? A Culture of Inclusion

Behind this change was a shift in mindset. The leadership chose to understand, not fix. Volunteers stepped up. Members formed friendships. The church made discipleship accessible by accommodating communication and learning needs. The ripple effects are now evident: individuals with special needs are no longer just being served—they are also beginning to serve in the church.

Looking Ahead: Engaging the Youth through Inclusion

In their continued partnership with KIN, St James’ Church anticipates further equipping in 2025 and beyond – through a workshop on forming Christ-centered inclusive small groups, and a Youth Ministry sermon on disability inclusion. We look forward to seeing how the congregation continues to bear fruit in God’s love.
